Podcast Episode: The Human Side of Organisational Change: Why Good Plans Still Stall

Most organisations don’t struggle with change because they lack plans, methodologies or project discipline.

They struggle because the human part of change is still too often treated as something to add once the “real” work has been designed.

I recently joined Vantage Point Conversations for a wide-ranging discussion about what actually happens when strategy meets people.

We talked about the difference between managing change and leading it; why technically sound transformations can still lose momentum; the pressure created by unrealistic change timelines; and why organisations need people with genuine change capability, rather than assuming communication alone will carry people through.

We also moved into the leadership questions underneath all of this.

  • What does good leadership look like when the environment is uncertain and you cannot provide people with perfect answers?

  • How much does the leader’s own self-awareness affect the way change lands?

  • And why does communication remain one of the most important, and most underestimated, leadership capabilities?

One of the themes running through the conversation is something I see repeatedly in my work:

The technical solution can be right and the change can still struggle.

Because people don’t experience a transformation plan. They experience decisions. Uncertainty. Changed expectations. New relationships. Lost competence. Competing priorities. And the behaviour of the leaders around them.

Ignoring that doesn’t make the human component disappear. It usually makes the change slower, harder and more expensive.

In the conversation

We explore:

  • change management versus change leadership

  • what “putting people first” actually means in practice

  • the tension between project timelines and genuine organisational adoption

  • why dedicated change capability matters

  • leadership in complex and uncertain environments

  • communication as an ongoing leadership skill

  • self-awareness and the less tangible aspects of leadership

The full conversation is approximately 81 minutes.
